1970's Les Paul Fingerboard Replacement
I know that I'm guilty of making guitar repair sound like anyone can do it. But the fact remains if that were so I would not be re-repairing so many "repaired" instruments.
The refret attempt on this Les Paul left the fingerboard in shambles, not the least of which was the rounded off neck binding. Obviously that wasn't the only problem with this former repair.
This one is going to get a new fingerboard...the slots were severely chipped and filled with superglue, they were no longer parallel with one another and there is damage to the inlays as well.

Because finish is applied over the neck and binding, separating the 2 will result in some finish chipping. In order to minimize this I scrape the finish thin along the fingerboard binding, then cut thru it along the joint. All in hopes of controlling the finish chipping. Ah, wouldn't it be nice if we were always in control?

Joy! Despite the major headaches of touching up chips along the sides of the neck it looks pretty good to me. Honestly, I feel as though the finish is the ultimate challenge on these, especially when you are not going to refinish the entire neck...which I did not. And this one was a little more hassle because the finish was not opaque.
